Active Rock songs rarely chart on the iTunes Top 100 at all, and when they do the introductory tracks to the new albums only last two or three days after their release to the general public. However, Disturbed's “The Sound Of Silence” (TSOS) continues to defy this established and conventional trend on the iTunes website.
TSOS is the third, not the first, release off of Disturbed's Immortalized CD/Digital Album. The song currently sits at number 53 on the chart, and has spent time in the Top 50 on Saturday. TSOS has now spent 27 days in the iTunes Top 100, and the song continues to grow as Disturbed fans introduce the song to their friends who would normally never listen to any singles by the band.
The “word of mouth” effect since the video's release in early December continues to spread and encourage people to buy the single. “Mainstream” songs TSOS has displaced today include Taylor Swift's “Out Of The Woods,” Demi Lovato's “Confident,” and One Direction's “Drag Me Down.” TSOS should finish the sales week (which ended at midnight Thursday) within the Top 70, and should rank even higher next week.
TSOS streaming remains unusually strong for an Active Rock song
Both “The Sound Of Silence's” On-Demand Streaming (ODS) and Video Streaming (VS) remain unusually strong for an Active Rock song. TSOS received 767,516 streams last week on Spotify (the tracking week for ODS and VS) to 7,199,513. The official video for the song rose 1.328 million to 7,199,513, despite its unexplained (and inexcusable) exclusion from VEVO, the popular music video streaming website. The Tampa Bay Rock Examiner has emailed VEVO twice, but has yet to receive an official response from the company.
TSOS's airplay building at Active Rock
Despite “The Sound Of Silence's” acoustic and subdued nature, atypical for both Active Rock and Disturbed, TSOS' airplay is building at the format. As of Saturday, the song has risen to #27 on Mediabase's All Stations Active Rock Audience (AS AR Au) Airplay Chart from its #30 position on Monday's official chart. Total audience has increased 194,000 since Monday, or 45.9 percent, to 617,000 impressions.
“The Sound Of Silence” has picked up three more stations since Monday, bringing the station total up to ten. TSOS has consistently ranked among the format's ten greatest daily gainers through the week, so the song should easily reach the Top 25 by Monday (in just it's second week on the AS AR Au Airplay Chart) when Mediabase officially releases the weekly charts for all tracked formats. TSOS has not reached Mediabase's Alternative Airplay Chart, quite surprising given the band's history of success at that format.
