Disturbed frontman David Draiman recalls rocking a "North Side stoner" look when he auditioned for the Chicago rock band 20 years ago this week.
"I walked into their rehearsal spot on the South Side of Chicago and the guys looked like they were from 'Skid Row.' LOL. All wearing faded/frayed, acid-washed jeans, flannel shirts (halfway open of course LOL), long, feathered and flowing hair, and Converse All Stars, with no laces, with the tongues out," Draiman wrote in a Facebook post Thursday.
"I could not have felt more out of place. I was wearing jean shorts (yes, jean shorts), sandals and a plain white T-shirt in full North Side Chicago/stoner mode, LOL."
Draiman, 43, said he saw an ad for the band in Illinois Entertainer magazine and talked to its guitarist, Dan Donegan, on the phone before meeting the other members. Draiman said his future bandmates suggested they perform some cover songs to "feel each other out."
Draiman suggested the band play one of its songs and he would improvise the lyrics. The results ended up becoming Disturbed's song "Want," off its 2000 debut studio album "The Sickness."
"Hard to believe that was 20 years ago (Thursday). What a crazy ride it's been, and how far we've come. Thanks to the most passionate and dedicated fans in the world!," Draiman wrote.
Disturbed went through lineup changes and a hiatus for a few years before releasing its "Immortalized" album in August 2015. The band played last month at the Chicago Open Air festival in Bridgeview.
