Disturbed frontman David Draiman admits it’s “strange” to be nominated for the same Grammy as Beyoncé
David Draiman: "It definitely stands out - like, one of these things is not like the other, you know?"
Disturbed frontman David Draiman has said that it’s “strange” that his band have been nominated in the same award category as Beyoncé at next year’s Grammy Awards.
Disturbed were among the honoured music acts to be included in Tuesday’s (December 6) nominations announcement, with the long-running metal band nominated for Best Rock Performance for their live cover of the Simon & Garfunkel song ‘The Sound of Silence’.
Beyoncé also landed herself a nomination in that category, with a nod going to her rock-indebted song ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself’ from her 2016 album ‘Lemonade’ – which features and was co-written by Jack White.

Speaking to Billboard about their second-ever nomination, Draiman was asked if it felt unusual to be up against Beyoncé for the award. “I have mad respect for all the artists in this category, including and especially Jack White,” he said. “Is it strange [to be up against Beyoncé]? I think the reason you asked the question is because it is. It definitely stands out — like, one of these things is not like the other, you know? But what are you going to do?”
Draiman maintained that the idea of Beyoncé being nominated in what traditionally isn’t her usual category didn’t “bother” him, but he was wary of the other competition he and his band faced in the Best Rock Performance category.
“What bothers me is that everybody in this category are giants of the field,” he explained. “These are the biggest of the big, the people who made a serious impact this year. Those boys in Twenty One Pilots did some damage this year. And David Bowie, a posthumous award happens all the time, and who more deserving? It’s crazy the amount of talent in this category.”
Elsewhere in the fall-out from Tuesday’s nominations announcement, Rihanna has denied that there is a rift between herself and Beyoncé after the former was snubbed by the Grammys.
“I wish y’all would drop this topic and see things from the bigger picture!” she wrote in a comment on her Instagram. “We don’t need to be putting black women against each other! We deserve to be celebrated, and the Grammy Academy agrees!”

Disturbed’s David Draiman Thinks It’s “Strange” To Be Competing With Beyonce For Best Rock Performance Grammy
One of the quirkiest facets of the 2017 Grammy nominations is that R&B mega-star Beyonce is up for Best Rock Performance. Her song “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” which she recorded with Jack White, will compete against Disturbed‘s “The Sound of Silence,” Twenty One Pilots‘ “Heathens,” David Bowie‘s “Blackstar” and Alabama Shakes‘ “Joe” for the prize.
In an interview with Billboard, Disturbed frontman David Draiman says that he has “mad respect” for all the nominees, but adds that facing Beyonce in a rock category feels “strange.”
“It definitely stands out,” Draiman says. “Like, one of these things is not like the other, you know? But what are you going to do?”
He adds that the Best Rock Performance nominees are “the people who made a serious impact this year.”
“Those boys in Twenty One Pilots did some damage this year,” says Draiman. “And Bowie, a posthumous award happens all the time, and who more deserving? It’s crazy the amount of talent in this category.”
Draiman does wonder, however, “When did it all become ‘rock?'”
“If you look at every other genre, there are so many categories and sub-categories,” Draiman says. “For rock, this is all we’ve got, so everything ends up being jammed into these four categories.”
“Is it diverse? Absolutely. It’s too diverse!” he continues. “When you can have, with all due respect, a Beyonce and a Disturbed in the same category, something has gone wrong. Not taking anything away from her whatsoever, we’re just very different from each other.”
As for who will win the Best Rock Performance prize, Draiman’s money is on Bowie.
“If we’re gonna lose to someone, I’d love for it to be Bowie,” he says. “The nice thing about Bowie is that he’s been nominated in five categories, so he can give us this one!”
DISTURBED Singer Says Competing With BEYONCÉ For 'Rock' GRAMMY Is 'Strange'
Blabber Mouth | 2016-12-08
According to The Pulse Of Radio, DISTURBED frontman David Draiman said in a new interview with Billboard.com that it's "strange" to be competing against Beyoncé in the "Best Rock Performance" category at this year's Grammy Awards. DISTURBED is nominated for its live performance of "The Sound Of Silence", while Beyoncé is up for her track "Don't Hurt Yourself", which features Jack White.
Draiman remarked: "I have mad respect for all the artists in this category, including and especially Jack White. Is it strange [to be up against Beyoncé]? I think the reason you asked the question is because it is. It definitely stands out - like, one of these things is not like the other, you know? But what are you going to do?"
The other nominees in the category include TWENTY ONE PILOTS for "Heathens", David Bowie for the title track from his "Blackstar" album and ALABAMA SHAKES for a live rendition of their song "Joe".
Draiman added that the relative lack of rock categories at the Grammys, as compared to the pop, rap and country genres, is what has led to such a varied group of nominees. He explained: "If you look at every other genre, there are so many categories and sub-categories. For rock, this is all we've got, so everything ends up being jammed into these four categories."
He added: "Is it diverse? Absolutely. It's too diverse! When you can have, with all due respect, a Beyoncé and a DISTURBED in the same category, something has gone wrong. Not taking anything away from her whatsoever, we're just very different from each other."
Draiman told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that he wasn't even sure where his band fit into the modern metal scene. "I don't know that the metal that we were spawned from really exists anymore," he said. "Bands like IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, METALLICA, BLACK SABBATH, none of the bands which are called metal, or which are really referred to nowadays as metalcore, are really anything like these bands. So I don't even know that we fit in what is called metal today."
Disturbed Frontman Says it's 'Strange' His Band Was Nominated for the Same Grammy as Beyonce

Disturbed frontman David Draiman admits that the surprise twist, where his band was nominated for the same Grammy award category as Beyonce, strikes him as "strange." The band was nominated for Best Rock Performance in regards to their cover of “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel.
Beyonce received the Grammy nod for Best Rock Performance for her song “Don’t Hurt Yourself” from her album Lemonade, released this year. The song was co-written by Jack White of the White Stripes.
In an interview with Billboard, Draiman said about the surprise nomination, “I have mad respect for all the artists in this category, including and especially Jack White. Is it strange [to be up against Beyonce]? I think the reason you asked the question is because it is. It definitely stands out - like, one of these things is not like the other, you know? But what are you going to do?”
He went on to describe that Beyonce’s nod for Best Rock Performance doesn’t exactly “bother him,” but he does feel a lot of competition in the category being up against her.
“What bothers me is that everybody in this category are giants of the field,” he further said. “These are the biggest of the big, the people who made a serious impact this year. Those boys in Twenty One Pilots did some damage this year. And David Bowie, a posthumous award happens all the time, and who is more deserving? It’s crazy the amount of talent in this category.”
